Job Summary and Essential Functions


This position is responsible for all aspects of the offsite adoption program, including transport, records management, and internal and external communications, cleaning and care of animals at offsite locations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  

  • Communicate in a diplomatic and tactful manner with BAC staff, offsite locations staff, volunteers, and adopters through all steps of the offsite adoption process. 
  • Maintain correct information in the PetPoint database.
  • Coordinate and lead offsite adoption events, onsite adoptions and other BAC sponsored activities when needed.
  • Secure additional venues for offsite adoption events and keeping current relations active.
  • Coordinate the transportation of animals from the shelter to offsite locations and events.  
  • Visit and transport animals to offsite locations, as needed.  
  • Assist with cleaning of adoption areas used for animals in the offsite adoptions program (i.e. urine, fecal matter, bodily fluids, dirt and mud).  
  • Identify and develop volunteers that will ensure program success.  
  • Assist with recruiting, training, and retention of offsite adoptions volunteers.  
  • Train and oversee offsite volunteers.
  • Understand the adoption process and guidelines set by BAC.  
  • Maintain confidentiality with adopters’ personal information.  
  • Remove personal opinions/views/judgements in order to make the appropriate animal/client match in a professional manner. 
  • Always treat people and animals with respect, contribute to effective teamwork, promote staff cooperation, and foster public relations beneficial to BAC.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements to Perform Work


  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Six (6) months of related experience; 
  • Experience and/or training involving retail sales or customer service; 
  • Animal care experience, animal husbandry;
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license for South Carolina with a safe driving record.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must be dependable with attendance and punctuality. 
  • Departmental testing may be administered during interview;  
  • A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of PetPoint Animal Database (training provided).
  • Knowledge and familiarity with animals, animal care, animal behavior, and experience working with animal welfare.  
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented and frequently changing environment.  
  • Ability to work courteously and cooperatively with volunteers, staff, and the public.  
  • Ability to work as a team player, supporting the overall goals of the organization as well as BAC mission, policies, and practices.  
  • Strong interpersonal skills – outgoing, patient, professional, and able to get along well with others.        
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and work in a fast-paced environment under sometimes tight deadlines.  
  • Ability to orchestrate large events, while interacting with all levels of society.  
  • Ability to read, write and understand English. Strong written and oral communication skills.  
  • Ability and initiative, working with minimal supervision and direction.  
  • Must be well organized. 
  • Ability to work with animals of unknown disposition and those who may exhibit medical and other problems, as well as aggressive tendencies.  
  • Ability to maintain personal boundaries in the face of highly emotional situations.


Physical Demands


This position requires the employee to reach with hands and arms; stand; walk; use hands to handle, feel, finger, grasp or operate objects, tools, or controls; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear; use mental acuity and repetitive motion. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to ninety (90) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.


Work Conditions


The work is regularly performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands. The employee is frequently exposed to an indoor and outdoor environment and climate condition. The employee is frequently exposed to animal odors and animal fur.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Hours will not exceed twenty-nine (29) hours per week. Must be flexible to work anytime Saturday and Sunday, five (5) hours a day. Specific times may vary. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
