Position Summary:


The Assistant Store Director oversees and directs the Front-End department as well as assisting in the direction and oversight of the store team for all store operations, serving as the manager on duty in absence of the Store Director. The position supports the Store Director in ensuring excellent customer outcomes, effective conflict resolution, strong team leadership, a positive and safe work environment, organized and efficient operations, a visually appealing space, and sound financial outcomes.


Specific areas of accountability include customer service, team leadership and engagement, health and staff safety, operations, purchasing and merchandising, financial, and creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for staff and customers. This position is also responsible for collaborating with Mississippi Markets administrative functions (HR, Finance, Marketing, Purchasing) to ensure strong organizational alignment and communications.

Qualifications:



  • Customer Service: Proven ability to ensure exceptional customer service, conflict resolution, and experiences across a department or unit; ability to recommend and implement opportunities to enhance the customer experience within a department

  • Retail Experience: Experience in a fast-paced grocery retail setting including perishable or non-perishable inventory management as well as tracking, improving, and managing product margins

  • Operational Excellence:  Demonstrated ability to provide effective oversight for one or more retail and/or sales departments; proven ability to allocate resources, set priorities, and delegate for multiple positions; utilizes processes for productivity, quality, and service

  • Financial Oversight: Demonstrated experience being responsible for a budget, controlling costs, and managing product margins to meet departmental financial goals; experience in cash handling, knowledge of proper cash handling procedures, including counting, verifying, and reconciling transactions; proven ability to achieve outcomes that support store and/or organizations strategic goals

  • Team Leadership: Supervisory experience including hiring, training, development, performance management, coaching, and team building for a supervisory group (ex. shift leads, etc.); skilled at creating a positive and inclusive work environment, ability to motivate and collaborate with a diverse team to achieve goals; track record of achieving excellent results through effective day to day supervision of staff and developing high performing teams

  • Communication: Proven ability in expressing self, actively listening, self-awareness, empathy, and flexible communication for effective leadership and professionalism in all interactions; ability to clearly convey policies, priorities, and goals in a manner that builds cohesiveness and rapport; ability to foster open communication, empower, and motivate department teams to work towards achieving shared goals; ability to remain calm, professional, and optimistic during challenging situations and effectively resolve conflicts in a constructive and positive manner

  • Prioritization and Time Management: Proven ability to prioritize and effectively manage resources with competing demands and changing priorities; skilled in balancing priorities, managing time and delegating to effectively lead, empower, and develop department leadership and team, and achieve goals

  • Adaptability and Resiliency: Proven ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances and demands; the ability to pivot strategies in response to shifts, unexpected challenges, department, or store needs; ability to recommend and implement new strategies, processes, and policies, supporting teams through transitions and ensuring departments remain responsive to customer needs; the ability to remain calm under pressure, along with resiliency to handle setbacks, learn from experiences, and foster adaptable teams

  • Problem Solving: Proven ability to identify, understand, and implement effective day-to-day solutions for department or store-wide challenges; a history of choosing the best course of action based on the pros and cons, available resources, long term impact, and potential outcomes of a decision; ability to foster a problem-solving mindset and encourage innovative thinking within team; proven ability to solve problems and make effective decisions during a crisis

  • Technical Skills: High basic to intermediate computer skills including web browsing and Microsoft Office and/or Office 365; proven ability to effectively use technology including email, message boards, etc. for effective communication; proficient in Microsoft Excel including ability to navigate spreadsheets and familiarity of basic functions, such as copy/paste, calculate sums; demonstrated ability to effectively use scheduling, payroll and other manager applications; basic math skills including ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Multi-Department Oversight: Demonstrated ability to provide effective oversight and leadership for a store, departments, or units

  • Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with natural foods products and industry strongly preferred

  • Safety Practices: Familiarity with food and staff safety practices 

  • Technical Skills: Demonstrated ability to effectively utilize SharePoint and Teams; proficient in Microsoft Excel including ability to navigate spreadsheets and familiarity of basic functions, such as copy/paste, calculate sums

Physical and Working Requirements:


The position involves frequent stationary tasks, along with regular movement within the grocery, front end, deli, and storage areas. Frequent positioning is required to access both low and high shelving, equipment, and products. The job also entails the frequent movement of containers weighing up to 60 lbs. Assistant Store Directors frequently handle grocery, produce, and deli items and may occasionally ascend/descend a ladder to reach high shelving. Assistant Store Directors will utilize various equipment including but not limited to a POS system, knives, pallet jack, a baler, computers, and printers. This role requires exchanging accurate information in person, over the phone, and through email and other written communication. Assistant Store Directors will occasionally work in a walk-in cooler and be exposed to sanitizer, cleaning products, and loud noises. Additionally, Assistant Store Directors must have the ability to travel between locations and must meet the Mississippi Market's safe driver requirements.
